4 Products for a More Sustainable Kitchen

Sustainable Kitchen

Today Lizzy learns…how to have a more sustainable kitchen.

We try our best to make environmentally friendly choices in our house. However, when we stand back and look we realize there is always room for improvement. This year we learned about a few different ways to make a more sustainable kitchen.

1) Cloth towels for paper towels

When we moved into our new house in 2022, I didn’t want to get back into the habit of using a paper towel every time that I washed my hands, spilt some juice or wanted to clean the counters. I felt like I was going through a roll every other day. I did some research and found a few reusable paper towels but I didn’t quite want to spend that much money. We use this daily and then we incorporate them into loads of laundry as they are done throughout the week. You can use whatever works for you, but the best we have found are simple Target brand.

2) Beeswax wrap and tubber ware for single-use cling wrap

Ditch the plastic wrap and stash your tubber in reusable beeswax plastic wrap or tubber ware. Both options are easy to clean and easy to store. Traditional plastic wrap is one-time use and has negative effects on both the air and land. When plastic wrap ends up in landfill, a highly toxic chemical is released call dioxin. Additionally, plastic wrap picks up bacteria and metals which create contaminated pieces of plastic that animals mistake for food.

3) Reusable Sandwich Bags for single-use sandwich bags

Until my son started school, I don’t feel like I used sandwich bags often. However, once we started packing lunches I felt like I was reaching for them each day. We decided to make the investment on reusable sandwich bags. We haven’t had any issues with leaking with this brand and you can stick them right into the dishwasher to be cleaned. A great addition to a sustainable kitchen.

4) Reusable kitchen bags & produce bags for plastic grocery bags

This is probably the easiest addition to make to your household. You can use any bag that you have in the house to take to the grocery stores. We actually use the big Ikea bags! If you want bags specifically made for produce, this is a great option.
